"This is definitely a book for all ages, young and old alike. Life is full of personal challenges and triumphs with many lessons to be learned along this journey, causing us to adapt to our ever changing circumstances. Life is unpredictable, and speaking from personal experience, things do not always go as planned, so we need to make adjustments along the way. Each and every one of us play a vital role in this universe and whether singularly or together as a whole, we can make a positive difference. Certainly, Staarabu and Anana did!"

"Local Author, Dan Haugen is contributing the earnings from the sale of his children’s book, Staarabu Was Wise, Anana Was Gentle, to support the work of Simpson Housing Services. Funding is scarce to support the services needed by the adult and children participants in our programs; all have experienced homelessness. It is a great honor to be included in the launch of his beautiful book that speaks to the power each of us has to make the world a better place for everyone in our community. His financial support arrives at a time of great need. Our community deserves to hear the message of his story and also witness that each person can make a difference; just as Dan is doing."

The tapestry of his story weaves friendship between unlikely comrades with environmental sensitivity, whimsy with perserverance, and dedication with joy. "From the very first page, with it's singsong rhyme and easy flowing read, this book captivates both young and old readers alike. The story line is fun, entertaining and motivationally important in the grand scheme of life and what it's all about. A must-read for everyone!"

Starabu was Wise, Anana was Gentle is a book full of striking illustrations and an encouraging message that is set to a pleasant, rhythmic cadence. It is both educational and inspirational,. with cross-cultural themes woven throughout. This book is quickly becoming a family favorite, one that both our 3 and 9 year old boys are eager to read again and again.

The message in this book is ideal for teaching children about problem solving, helping others, and facing our fears. There is an abundance of new vocabulary words that would be especially beneficial for primary grade children. I especially like how the author ends the story by explaining how we can learn from the experiences of Bu and Nana. He takes the abstract of the story and makes it concrete.
